The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is making its United States debut for the first time. The hybrid has been available across the pond for some time now and the model is the top-selling PHEV in Europe. Boasting the same style at the conventional gas-powered Mitsubishi Outlander, the hybrid Outlander PHEV will have some unique badging.
Engine and Performance
As for powertrain, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with two electric motors mounted on the front and rear axles will power the hybrid. The Lancer Evolution’s super all-wheel control has been configured to work with the two electric-motor setup. The 12-kWh lithium-ion battery will be charged via regenerative braking.
The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will come stocked with three drive modes. They consist of EV (fully electric), series hybrid (electric power with additional power from the generator), and parallel hybrid (the engine and electric motors working together).
Safety and Technology
The latest Outlander PHEV will also see the latest in safety features, including Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. As for connectivity, the hybrid will feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.
Fuel economy, electric-only range, and pricing haven’t been released just yet. The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV hits the market in fall 2016. Given that Mitsubishi announced its future was to focus on crossovers and electric vehicles, the Outlander PHEV is a fantastic start.
