Looking for a beautiful city to visit? Stop by Bakersfield. Located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, Bakersfield is one of the largest cities in the area. With more than 375,000 people, there’s always something to do in the area.
Bakersfield was officially founded around 1873. Named after Thomas Baker, an Ohio lawyer drawn by the gold rush, the city soon became a stopover for weary travelers. Thanks to the booming oil industry, the city grew rapidly in the late nineteenth century. Between 1970 and 2010 the city grew by over 400%, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation.
There are tons of museums to visit in Bakersfield. These include the Kern County Museum, providing a background of the region and the oil industry, and the Crystal Palace and Museum, which was constructed in 1996 as a prime location for country western music.
Like the outdoors? Check out places like Hart Park with its famous peacocks, the Park at River Walk, or Nature and Wildlife tours around Wind Wolves Preserve. Covering 93,000 acres, this massive non-profit preserve is home to Tule elk, a range of fish, foxes, lizards, and more. You can hike or simply appreciate the scenery, and with elevation ranging from 640 feet to over 6,000 feet, you can see an array of flora and fauna.
Want to find some good eats? Stop by the Nuestro Mexico Restaurant, the 24th Street Café, Uricchio’s Trattoria, or La Costa Mariscos. These are just a few of the many famous places to grab a bite. For more information, see Trip Advisor.
