Mitsubishi is always working to give its engines the edge in power, fuel efficiency, and emissions. The resulting technology is the Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control system, MIVEC for short. The first MIVEC engine was used in the 1992 Mitsubishi Mirage and since then, the technology has only improved - Just look at the 2018 models MPG ratings.
Originally designed to improve performance, the system has evolved to effect both fuel economy and the amount of emissions produced, too. MIVEC is also known as variable valve timing (VVT) technology. Due to increasingly strict government emissions regulations, many automakers are turning to VVT technology but none if doing it quite like Mitsubishi.
The newest MIVEC engines control both intake valve timing and the amount of valve lift every second the engine is running. The engine minimizes pumping loss by adjusting the intake air volume. This leads to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Compact and lightweight, MIVEC technology also drops the curb weight of many vehicles.
MIVEC technology is available in the entirety of Mitsubishi’s lineup. That’s good news for your wallet!
